Contract bid designs
The drawings by Sant’Elia which were executed for architects or for private clients were inevitably restricted by these latter’s requirements. The pencil strokes seem restrained in the several drafts of plates for the competition for the new headquarters of the bank the Cassa di Risparmio di Verona (1913-14). The designs he drew up for the competition for Milan Central Station did not meet with success (1912), being passed over by the commissioning architect Cantoni, possibly because he felt that there was too reckless a Wagnerian influence, with the same applying to his design for the Cemetery of Monza (1911-12), which was severely treated by the adjudicating panel. There is no evidence that he sent all of the documentation required for the competition for the new Church of Salsomaggiore (1914): there appearing only a series of drawings relating to the competition, in themselves professionally executed but quite lacking in floor plans or indications of scale.
