Though ostensibly no more than exercises, the sheets datable from 1908 to 1911 can nevertheless be seen as containing elements that were subversive of the simple academic practice of the time.
The first four’s strictly orthogonal views bring together features drawn from the traditional architectural repertoire in a disharmonic synthesis that is resolved more in their theatrical monumentality rather than through the arrangement of spaces. The two pencil sketches give a foreshortened view of architectural details according to a deliberately offset framing.
